Oliver Bahm is a magician from Illingen in Germany, which is near Stuttgart which is in the very south of Germany. Pretty remote place and in my opinion very backward.
Oliver Bahm has made a reputation on Facebook by being the creator of a group call "Trickerfinder" which translates to "Inventor(s) of tricks"
That group basically sells other people's creations. Most of the selling is done by Oliver Bahm himself.
But he has a sneaky way to get around the usual publisher rights and to avoid legal responsibility. By basically changing every word and by slightly changing the method / effect of the trick. According to what he claims. I don't know that for sure, but I have good reason to doubt that.
I have a couple of screen shots of some magicians communicating with him where he is offering to sell unaltered copyrighted ebooks. But those are just screen shots and the deal was never made.
So in terms of copyrights he is in the legal zone. Morally of course not. Aside from that, his performing persona is very, very unlikable. I wonder how he gets gigs. Very much up the high horse, looking down. But this may be due to the location he is in.
He clearly wants to be more than he is. He clearly thinks of himself more than he is. And he certainly doesn't give care about what others think of him.
He also has that practice which I really despise of having multiple cloned websites with different regional names within to indicate that he comes from there.
Most recent case. Alexander de Cova has a pretty good book series in German, called "Burners" really good books. Really good. Oliver Bahm actually claims via is Facebook group to have those books as pdf. And those that what to look at them should contact him. He even goes as far as saying that further distribution is not allowed. How dense is that man?
He clearly knows it is wrong to do that and has since removed that statement. Which is a clear indication of him being aware that this behavior is wrong.
I'm sure he will say it was a gag and nothing like that is true, but we all know better. His track record is not in his favor.
Meet Evan, a a world-traveling entertainer, filmmaker, and father from Louisville/Crestwood, Kentucky. A very likable chap with a complete misunderstanding of magic. To him magic is nothing but a puzzle that requires explanation. Or so it seems. Evan has a YouTube Channel and over a million subscribers. Let that sink in. so over a million people get a notification when he is about to explain magic. But not his own ideas... no, mostly beginners tricks, but also store bought tricks. None of the things he "teaches" are his own. All the creations of others.
And I feel very strongly about that particular thing. If you just ruminate the creative effort of others you are nothing but a parasite. And a parasite Evan Era is. In the strictly technial sense. He just gains from those ideas and my guess is that he doesn't pay the creators any royalties, nor credits them.
Among the stuff he reveals are the Diminishing Cards, the Zig Zag Rope, the Magic Butterfly, the Water Crystal, Sword through Balloon, the Four Dimensional Trunk and the Card Zig Zag basically the whole Tenyo catalog up and down.
But not only that, also the classic Pen through Bill, the Knife through Arm, Sword Swallowing, the Appearing Cane, the Neck Cracker Gimmick, Several Fire Gimmicks, basic Spoon bending, the mirror glass, and he also reveals the Himber Ring.
The business model is obvious. His income is the videos themselves. That is a sound way of making some money. But he does it under the pretext of teaching magic. And he is not.
His is not teaching... he glosses over the method, with his limited understanding of magic, he regurgitates what others have said before him. He adds nothing new, shows no understanding of effect, structure and composition of a routine. Its just a dealer demo with an explanation.
And he sucks at sleight of hand. His videos are cut, mainly before the actual effect. This maybe a cut done for the purpose of pacing, but also reveals his lack of understanding magic.
Go to 15:25 to see Keith Barry's version of the spike trick.
Alright, now that you've see the trick, watch this:
A copycat! His name: The Amazing Raven, a performer who's real name is Stephen Robert John Gaudet. He's a tour manager of a hypnotist called Reveen. So you would think that he knows about not taking other people's material. If you look at some other acts of his, you'll notice that nothing really is his own. You will see a lot of The (not so) Amazing Kreskin bleed through as well as some other well known mentalists.
Watch him fuck up the Magic Square by clicking here. In case you don't know what was supposed to happen. Within 60 seconds he was supposed to fill in the numbers in a grid. I do a Magic Square in my show. 23 seconds. So 60 seconds is more than enough not have an error. But he had an error. He was not able to subtract 20 from the target number. So naturally he fucks up. And needs another 60 seconds to get himself back on track. The only redeeming thing about that performance is his assistant Whitly holding the board that he's writing on. Man, she is a piece of eye candy,,,, Kudos! If you clicked the above link you can see the entire show. And I dare you to watch this in one go. You cannot.
These things happen if you don't practise and rehearse. Which is what I accuse Steve of!
His production quality is good. Too good actually as all the screen, the music and the light makes it appear that Steve Gaudet is a professional. He clearly is not... or should not be. He maybe a wonderful human being, he maybe a great tour manager, but an even decent mentalist he is not,
Here is another video. Him doing hypnosis. The guy is clearly a stooge. This is clear to even the most brain dead spectator. Steve Gaudet make is look like he is able to hypnotise a random guy into becoming a juggler. Which he does. Then the stooge juggles, way too good to be believable. With knives!
Is there any need to be that "false"? He does some routines that I cannot place. But I have a hard time believing that he came up with any presentation by himself. Except maybe that atrocity of a hybrid monster that is Svengali and Tossed Out Deck. Stealing material, sucking at basic performance skills and failing to understand mentalism, as the limits of believability were clearly broken, make me announce the following. Steve Gaudet, you are this weeks magic failure.
But in order to be more on the constructive side of things, here are some pointers.
Put your spin on the classic routines! Do not take other people's work and sell it as your own! There are a few simple steps to take in order to create you own presentation. Start with a premise on why you are able to do what you can do! If you solved that the rest should get worked out.
Rehearse your material! This means (among other things) going through the motions so often, that you can do it effortlessly.
If you wanna be a mentalist, make sure you are believable. If you cannot figure out what feels real and what clearly is not, then you should get the help of those who can differentiate. Those usually are other mentalists, but they wont help you as you are stealing their material. But a good producer can do the same. Get help!
Long answer: Brian Brushwood has long been of a thorn in magic. His heart may be in the right place, but his actions are not helping to get that message across. I'm talking about his long running YouTube series Scam School. The premise of that show is to "scam" other people into buying you a drink. Naturally he covers magic on that show. And exposes it. Most of it is harmless. But once in a while he fucks up. The exposure of the Invisible Deck comes to mind.
But now he's "teaching" a retention vanish of a coin. It absolutely is exposure and NOT a scam to get a beer. In fact that little premise of the show is completely omitted this time. It would have led to a scam if a duplicate coin was loaded under the spectators drink. And the bet would be that "if I can get the coin under your drink without you and me touching the drink, I get that drink that you are having."
Then doing the NOT a vanish but a switch for a transparent plastic disc which is then dropped into the spectators drink. He looks inside, it looks like the coin is in the beer. But a little magic and everything is as it should be. That would be a scam.
It looks like Brian has lost the focus on what to do.
Brian! Get help! Get a research team! A creative team!
UK magician Paul Stockman may be not of the brightest lights among the magic community. But he has balls. Let me elaborate:. When it comes to advertisement you should not tell a lie. You may exaggerate a bit, but a lie is a big NO NO!
So what did he do you may ask? I'm getting to the point you impatient fan of the blog.
He basically took a few pictures of him an celebrities and put them on his website. So it seems.
In fact those pictures are fake.
Here is a picture of Tony Bennett and one of Sarah Michelle Geller. Both are wax figures and not real.
Paul Stockman took a picture while standing next to them. That in itself is not a pathetic thing. But to use those pictures in ones own advertisement is a low that I have not come across yet.
The following image is a screenshot from Paul's website.
You can clearly see the puppets there. The picture with Ricky Gervais (Spelled wrong on his website btw) is a great fabrication. And bad photoshop.
The original picture shows Ricky Gervais next to David Bowie. A facebook user placed them side by side:
The same dopey face you find in the picture with Simon Cowell.
Now I hear you say... .well, he at least doesn't say that he actually performed for these people. Well he says a lot of things on his website. One of the gems is this great line: "THE ONLY U.K PERFORMER TO SPECIALISE IN STAGE AND STAND UP PERFORMANCE." Oh really? The only one? He also has a promo video. Around the 2:50 mark you will see this great image. The Headline reads: "Mentalist From U.K Performs for Tony Bennett in New York." Since the picture is a fabrication so I must assume the claim is a fabrication as well.
So I have to ask myself does a successful performer have to do this? A clear no is the answer.
In the news section of his website you can find this: "
PAUL WINS TOP AWARD We are thrilled to announce that Paul has won the award for International Psychological Entertainer of the year. The Stockman camp is still celebrating after finding out the news that they beat Derren Brown to the post by just a hand full of votes. Celebrities, The General Public and Paul's peers voted to put him at the top."
Oh boy his is wrong on so many levels. You never put another performers name in your advertisement! (Which is the point of his website) You never put yourself above another performer in your advertisement! Also: The Award for International Psychological Entertainer of the Year? What award is that? I dare to assume that award is fake. Please correct me on that if I am wrong. Also, why didn't Derren Brown win that?
Why can't a month go by without a fucking screw up by Craig Petty.
RED was a dangerous move. But this is stepping right into the hypocrisy.
As you may know Craig Petty is part of a group called "Slightly Unusual - The Comedy Illusionists".
I fail to understand the unusual aspect of the groups work, but it's a name that creates interest. I'm not judging.
Of course they don't expose it for the sake of exposing it. They hide the fact a bit and call it "team building". Basically they sell the members of a company magic secrets and disguise it as a team building exercise.
You can't polish a turd, it's still a pig... or however the saying goes.
Skulkor has releases Deflect. I saw the trailer. My initial thought: "What the hell is that thing? Bullshit!" and I thought I was done with it.
Turns out the WPR gives that a high rating. My second thought: "Well it's WPR, both guys are magicians who have no concept of good magic!" and I thought I was done with it.
At the Green Monster "This looks awesome.", "This has me curious."
Are you guys retarded or what? This is shit. Seriously! Try to follow my train of thought! So you have a card box and a marker. Alright, so write something on the box? Really? How the hell do these objects relate to one another? Not at all!
The effect (something written changes) is good in itself, as the effect could lend to meaningful magic. But no, it is yet another card thing. This has no reason to be. Why not write the gibberish on a business card and then change that to the correct prediction? Oh yeah, because of the method. That doesn't fucking matter. So let me give you the inner monologue the magician has to go through:
"So you picked a card, let me write down the name of your card. Let's see, what could I possibly use as a surface to write on? Oh yeah, this box of cards is great. How about writing it on the narrow side, so it is only visible for just a few people? Yeah that's great. It's not like I got the option of writing on the bigger side of the box, or on some cards, or business cards, or not at all."
Can you see it now? Probably not, because you are retarded. You got Skulkor-Syndrome. Let me explain. When you see a trick and you are fooled, you instantly think it is great and good and the second coming of Dai Vernon. If it uses props you already use you come instantly and spurt your magic sauce all over the Internet, by posting stuff like "I ordered it and it shipped". The cause for Skulkor-Syndrome is kinda unknown. Research suggests, that not being a worker will cause it.
Let me get serious for a moment: I don't see this going into the repertoire of working magicians. They can do stronger stuff and more logical stuff without even breaking a sweat. Since whatever the gibberish turns into is forced anyway, you can actually prepare some business cards and have them stacked in your stock of business cards.
So here is a possible trick, just to get this post a bit more on the constructive side. Draw animals on the back of some of your business cards. Common animals that are likely to be named. Have them in a known order on the bottom of the stock. The bottom card is a "general animal".
Get out business cards. Show the top few and don't make a big deal of it. Turn the stock around so the backside is towards yourself. Ask a few to think of an animal. Pretend to read their minds and pretend to draw. Put the business card with the "general animal" on the table or a spectators hand with the drawing side down. Have the animal named, and instantly cull the correct one to the bottom of the stack you are holding. Ask them to turn over the prediction. Let the gag play out and then take back the card "I'm not a great artist, but I am right, I swear!" place the card on the bottom of the stack and you are basically ready for any double lift based change. And you have a business card to hand out.
Of course you do, being a faithful reader and such. If not, let me get you up to date:
Mentalism Peyman is a self proclaimed mentalist and illusionist, selling tricks and ripping off copyrighted material. Just follow the link and see the wonderful videos that back up my point.
I almost forgot about him, until I got a newsletter by a German magic dealer who advertises a product that features said wannabe performer with the charismatic aura and confused look of a guinea pig that has been thrown against a brick wall.
It's a levitation called Power Levitiation 1. And as expected it looks like shit, but that is just my personal opinion. But see for yourself! This is official demo video:
Think about it! This gem in levitation system costs more than 2000 dollars, but they cannot invest in a proper video? Hell, even HD? This gives you a little bit of a clue how much the costumer is valued. And btw. It looks hella uncomfortable for the person levitating. If I would be bending backwards like that I would be in pain. This version is even worse:
It always feels like magic is used for even less than base motifs.
Jack Moyer finally being searched for by something worse than police and law. The media!
The odd thing about this is the following: Aaron Harp does a trick near the end. With sharpies.
It looks a lot like the Color Match trick by Promystic. Exept that it is not. Make of that what you will.
"Okay, what's he done now" you're asking! Well Scam School of course. So he exposed the Grands "Million Dollar"-bill mystery from the Tarbell books. "So what?" I hear you saying. "We have come to accept that this little turd reveals magic principles that he didn't come up with." I tell you this:
HE REVEALS STUFF HE DIDN'T COME UP WITH!. He has no permission to reveal it to the masses. That fucktard didn't even change a bloody thing about it.
Look Mr. Brushwood. You are free to spoil any magic you created. If it builds of the the creativity and genuis of others so be it. But do not, DO NOT, reveal it for the sake of revealing it.
I really don't know how much pressure is really is to come up with new material for a regular show. But if it forces you to fuck magic in the ass. A craft you seem to love, then you have gone too far.
I really have no idea how you justify this! I really would like to know.
I'm going ape shit here, because I do have this particular trick in my act. And I think it is one of those cool little gems that is so great, because it is so great on going around the intuitive solution. This is good magic. And you fucked it all. In the ass. Anal rapist Brushwood.
The thing is. You have a likable personality. You may even be the nicest guy around. But you are not doing magic a favour by doing what you do.
I saw a long stage show of yours on frauds and fakes. That was good. You spoilt nothing, yet you managed to entertain. But this recent outburst of exposure of yours is no better than the Masked Magician.
Shin Lim, has a trick out called "The Switch". Here is a brief description from the horse's mouth:
From the creative mind of Shin Lim: THE SWITCH is the cleanest way to switch a folded card for a spectators signed card. Imagine placing a Mystery card on a table, in someone's hand, in a clear box, well... anywhere. This is done in full view of the audience. You then have a another spectator select a random card and sign it. On your command you cause their sign car to vanish completely from the deck. The spectator is asked to open her hands, the mystery card that the spectators has been holding the entire time is opened. It is the signed selection!
THE SWITCH is the cleanest way to switch a card because there are no boxes, no envelopes, etc. Words cannot describe how clean the switch actually is.
And now the video:
I assume this gets deleted so here are the main bits: The folded mystery card is placed under a spectators hand and another spectator is handed the deck, so he can choose a card freely. That card is the Eight of Diamonds. Then the same spectator is given a pen to sign the card. Then a cut and we see the card being signed.... well not really, we see the pen moving, but not the actual signature. Only when the signature is finished the card is show bearing said signature. (this will become important) With no further cuts the card is placed in the pack in an outjogged position. What follows APPEARS to be the DB spread control, a bottom palm, a mercury fold, a palm and then the mystery card is unfolded to reveal to be the signed selection.
Appears is the word of choice here, as all these steps are faked. Let's compare the signed selection and the mystery card in the end:
They look very close to each other... Well just to make sure I put both images into Gimp and placed one image over the other, adjusted angle and size, then I changed the transparency of the top picture back and forth to compare the two cards.
Do you see that little bow? No, well here it is:
It is different. Ergo it is a different card. (also the end of the line and the cuve of the "J")
So if he uses a different card, that means the whole control, the palm and the fold are faked too. And that is hilarious. I took a look at the control in the video and there is no finger movement at all. And there should be some. Little, but some.
It also means the card was not signed in the shot. The signing was faked as well. Probably with a pen that doesn't write.
But here is the question: WHY? Seriously... Why. Only that the card on the table can be picked up more cleanly then it could be done in real life? Hardly, as the routine could be done for real and it wouldn't look much different.
What do you get when you have a guy who wants to be a film school graduate and he knows a bunch of magic tricks? Someone who humbly plasters his own name all over! Having said that, does he actually claim intellectual ownership to the lapping techniques, which are not even well done? Lacking time misdirection, telegraphing the moves needlessly and having this aura of "I don't belong here"?
Of course there is the exposure aspect, teaching material that is not his. I've gone over this many times. Briefly: emulating people who taught you magic and that you adore, by teaching material that is not yours will not get you the same amount of adoration. But his videos are well made. Props for that. Aside from that: Asshole!
I was busy so I missed the whole RED issue. If you have been busy as well, here is the short version:
Craig Petty (the better half of the Wizard Product review show) released a card trick named RED. In theory the effect should appear like this: In a blue backed deck of cards a red backed card is shown. The spectator is asked to think of a card. The red backed card is removes turned over and turns out to be the thought of card. At least that is what the trailer suggests. This is not what is happening and the trick is not as clean as hoped and has a multitude of problems and requires conditions over conditions. It requires a mathematical procedure, a thought-of card force stack and some rough and smooth.
So the trick has been out and it was pointed out by several people that this is exactly like Bob King's New Wave Prediction. Exactly the same. The "same mathematical procedure, the same thought-of card ranging force stack, the same rough and smooth stack."
So one could argue in Craig Petty's defense that sometimes great minds think alike. But a screen shot from the Magic Bunny Forum from 2005 surfaced where Craig Petty clearly states his favorite gimmicked card tricks. The very first item is New Wave Prediction.
So one could argue in Craig Petty's defense that Craig has no moral issue about copying other's work and claiming it as their own. But is this is untrue either, as watchers of the Wizard Product Review will know. Craig Petty has a sense of moral and ethics. And he clearly was against this sort of conduct of business. (Hat tip to the Smiling Mule)
So one could argue in Craig Petty's defense that he may have bought the rights to Bob Kings trick. And doing so would allow him to republish the routine with a new name and a new face. Petty's face! So far I know nothing of it. And if it were true, would it morally be true to omit the creator's name in the credit? I think not.
So it comes down to this. Craig Petty has released a known trick under his name. Craig clearly has a moral agenda when it comes down to theft, and it obviously doesn't apply to him. There is a professional term for this: Fucking hypocrite!
So you know this producer of the Illusionists? His name is Simon Painter... he has been working on just one more show. The name of the act: "The Naked Magicians". The two magicians starring in this production are Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne. The later one is no newcomer to this blog. Actually the later one has the website http://www.gospelmagic.com.au/... GOSPELMAGIC.... Seems a bit weird that he is now doing a naked act.
I guess the idea of the act is that they somehow never fully show you the goods. That's the gag. And I'm sure that is a great gag for a certain target audience if Simon Painter had decided to rape another form of art and not magic.
But first, let me treat you with this:
Feeling distracted? Did you notice there was some magic in that little routine? Probably not. You were too confused! And that is what is happening to everyone watching the video. It isn't about magic, magic is just a tool. A side gag if you want to. And that makes me sick.
I'll give you an example to make my point more clear. Let's say you are a comedian. You are a good comedian. You have shows all around the country. It took hard work to get there. You learned about comedy, you took lots of falls, but you always got up. You know how goes.
And then suddenly a fucking idiot gets successful with really cheap stock jokes. Some jokes he didn't come up with. But the audience doesn't notice, as he undresses during his act. Having the right target audience makes this guy an instant hit. You would be pissed. You worked hard on your act. And just adding a gimmick makes this guy successful.
Luckily the act with the naked magicians has not yet had it's premiere. Let's really hope the act fails.
Let me tell you about a product that I have only seen in a German magic store. It's called "ShaSEXpeare" by Polish magician Arsene Lupin. What you get is 18 pieces of thick paper with pictograms of plays by William Shakespeare. And they are of a sexual nature. The thing is that you show those pictograms to the audience letting them guess the play while they are laughing at the not so subtle sexual double entendre.
And there we have a weird little problem with the target audience. Sophisticated people - knowing about the works of Shakespeare - will find little to no enjoyment about the sexual connotations of the pictograms.
And those who do find enjoyment, care or know little about the plays of the English writer.
Also there is no fucking trick. It's a comedy piece I guess. For 60 Euros. 60! That is 82 dollars!
And the dealers advertisement text is written in the worst possible way.
Let me translate the best parts: "The sixth pictogram has a geographic and an erotic component, which is immedeately registered by an intelligent audience."
"These explanations are good fun for the audience as they feared a drop in the niveau."
"At this moment is is the great contrast that makes the presentation so interesting. You don't tell them a saucy story! Everything happens in the audience's minds! They may call out the corrosponding play in each pictogram and thereby show off their following educated middle-classprinciples - while proving at the same time that they understand what's going on!"
"Memorizing anything? Not a scrap! The titles of the plays are on the back of the cards"
Some good magic for a change. Jeff McBride a clear winner in my book. He truly deserves the title Master of Illusion. Just watch how energetic he enters the scene. That energy clearly moves over to the audience who is entranced by this entry.
The Jeff produces a large beautiful silk cloth from a golden fan. In a burst of confetti. I cannot tell how excited I am. I have no idea how this was done. The silk cloth surely came from nowhere. And the fact that it is a dragon cloth symbolizes the dragon within us.
That dragon fury is brought center stage with an artistic somersault. Then he walks back to the huge box behind him to pick up the cloth again. And then it happens.
Boom suddenly he transforms into the famous Pink Dragon of Flamingonia. Where the hell did the huge shoulder pieces come from? I have no clue. Then the dragon dances in a rain of confetti and rainbows. No doubt this means the love of the Pink Dragon towards mankind.
And then the transformation is complete when Jeff produces the mask from thin air. Sure it looks like he purposely went to his huge box behind him and picked something up, but this is not the case, as it would be cheating. And his transformation gets an additional kicker as he breathes fire, symbolized by the streamers.
And then the posing... critics might bash him for that, but no this art. It's an art form you dumb motherfuckers. The posing needs to be as the audience needs time to catch some breath and to come back to earth.
The snow storm in the end is a truly deserved emotional climax in the end, as you can see by the audience reaction. Especially the little girl on the right near the end of the video.
And to those who say this is shit, you are just haters and are jealous of the success of Jeff.
There is nothing you can do to make this better. This atrocity was brought to my attention in a German forum by somebody who did his version of it to music. I didn't even get the effect there.
I always had this weird stance on Jay Sankey. One the one hand I admire his creativity albeit it's full of rehashing, but on the other hand his business conduct seems more than fishy.
But this new trend of his makes me award him a title. Basically he had let himself down to deal with the scum of the magic community. The exposers on YouTube. Maybe Jay doesn't know, though his technical abilities make me doubt that. He should clearly know that the people he deals with are maybe not mean spirited towards magic, but clearly disrespecting the secrets of magic and the creators who have come up with those.
I don't understand why Jay even bothers to mess about with them? Is he possessed by the spirit of attention? Does he need to crave admiration so much that he goes there? I really hope I'm missing something here.
Is it really that hard to understand that the bird and the cage should be upside down on the paddle, so the bird and the cage look are orientated the right way when doing it for the spectators who are opposite of the magician?
