...do a convincing Pop-Up move with balls? Every single version that I have come across that teach/show the move (Danny Archer, Johnny Thompson) do it in a very unconvincing manner. It just looks like a move. Is this one of those moves that simply has no place in the real world? And don't tell me that it it fly right by layman. So does a French Drop. And I dare to say that the French Drop is the worst of all transfers. So have you seen anybody doing the Pop-Up Move and it didn't feel awkward?
Al Schneider does it pretty good with coins. haven't seen him using balls though...
ReplyDeleteAny way you can substitute the Double Steal? It looks good and is more convincing (in my opinion).
ReplyDeleteI agree with you (as always). The pop up move looks very bad, even in good hands.
ReplyDeleteIt telegraphs "move".
Marlo's roll up (double steal) when done properly is a thing of beauty.
It is completely natural looking and the dirty work is invisible.
Roth popularized it in his 3 ball routine. I am certain if more magicians were aware of this move the pop up would have never showed up.
then you haven't seen it in good hands...
DeleteAlright I did some googling... Where can I find Marlo's "bevel roll up" move?
ReplyDeleteAs Gershon mentioned David roth has Marlo's roll up in his lecture notes. Also
ReplyDeleteL& L has published stars of magic dvd and volume 9 has David roth doing the move. Please cheak it out its a piece of beauty Also as a bonus Roth explains a brief history of the move.If stars of magic series is not availabe its in the worlds greatest 3 ball trick Dvd by L&L.Please PM me for any other information

That the move you are talking about?
I see, that is the Pop-Up move alright. But even in the hands of the legend that is Dai Vernon the move looks like a move.
ReplyDeleteI actually remember seeing Schneider's coins across with that move when I was still a layperson, fooled me like crazy... But that is the only place I have seen it and have liked it.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you thing french drop is the worst transfer? Ialways use it and it works so well. I Just want to know your opinion
ReplyDeleteYou haven't really defined your terms on what problems exist with the pop-up move and what looks like a move and what doesn't, but I think that a lot of times magicians just don't think it through. Try this short vid (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2203251/ThreeBlindDice.mp4) and if the pop-up looks movey, we can try to dissect why, and if not, we can try to figure out why not.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Lance
great little routine Lance :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I forgot to answer... this was seriously the best version I have seen so far. It still is unnatural to put stuff in your fist like this, but at least it does look convincing.
ReplyDeleteThanks, terran. It's mostly Vernon...
ReplyDeleteRoland, I think this may be overextending the meaning of "natural" a bit. It's certainly not natural to do many of the actions we do, but just because something isn't common doesn't make it unnatural. Vernon once explained (in a sense) that what's natural is what fits the context. So, in a case like the pop-up move, instead of asking, "Is this natural?" we might ask, "Does this establish the conviction we need that what it looks like is what's actually happening?" If a move completely convinces the audience that things are how we want them to believe, we can accept some uncommon things to varying degrees.
