I am not, by any means desperate for an audience, but I do post (not always, but most of the time) where I'm going to be and when I'm going to be there on Facebook because people ask me to and it's easy to do. Not to mention, isn't posting what you're doing kind of the POINT of Facebook? I do agree with you about it being perhaps a bit attention seeking, but let's face it: No entertainer who has ever graced this earth DIDN'T crave attention At least a bit. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
I love your blog, Roland. I think you're hilarious, ballsy, and even at times a bit poignant. You've got gumption, and that is a rare, entertaining treat. I don't often comment because I honestly don't usually have much to say, but... I don't know, man... I kind of feel like you just took a cheap shot at people who successfully use social media as one of their many forms of promotion, and it feels to me like it's beneath you. I don't like it... And I don't like it because I DO like you.
Before you diss facebook as a marketing tool, let me tell you about how it saved a show of mine from total collapse. Myself and a few other magicians rented a theater and decided to do an ensemble magic show. We had traditional means of advertising and I had a strong facebook campaign. The week before the show was supposed to take place, the theater we rented was shut down by the fire department due to a small fire code violation. So we had a week to find a new theater and promote the show and all the work put into traditional means was now useless. The Facebook campaign however allowed us to update everybody on the change of venue and as result we delivered a show on the date and time promised just in a different venue and to great success. In another time we'd have to flat out cancel the show. I'm by no means a master promoter or business man but I know this, Social Media is the way of the future and the ones who take advantage of its full potential are going to be next generations winners.
