Anecdote

Some years ago I had a female friend visit me. She entered my flat and immediately saw the linking ring set hanging on the wall. I totally forgot to take that down. You know, sometimes stuff is around in the same spot for so long that you don't see it anymore. 

So there is no way to save the secret as it was hanging there openly, for everybody to see.

She looked at it and said: "one of the rings is broken" 

"Yeah I replied, that's why it is only decoration now, I cannot use it anymore"

I dodged a spoiler bullet there.
