So Peter Loughran has something new. A table which does all the work for you.
Is there seriously a need for that? Are those too lazy to actually practice the Cups and Balls so desperate to perform this, so they have to resort to this? Was the chop cup too damn hard?
Aside from those questions... This is like the very first method a layperson thinks of. The little miniskirt the table is wearing screams "load". I don't know why Peter Loughran keeps fucking up when it comes to creating props.
The best thing Peter ever released was "Seep". And that wasn't even something new.... wait, now that I think about it, the table is not a new idea either. I remember seeing a table like that years ago in a magic store. It was in the corner and collected dust. It was mechanical and needed to be operated by foot. But it was silent and if I recall correctly the masking on the table surface was way less obvious.
1250 dollars is the price for that little piece of apparatus? Does it work? I think so. I really believe that Peter is able to create working props. I had the "Entity" in my hands a few year ago. A huge ass brick of a gimmick, but it worked.
I got an idea though... Imagine having such a table. Only applying some principles from the illusion section of our craft. So the table looks way thinner. So you do your normal cups and balls, and then you offer to explain how the lemon got under the cup. You put all the cups aside and get out a glass. You put the glass at the sweet spot and move away. Do something that makes sure that everybody is looking at you. At that time the lemon loads itself under the glass. When people look back the glass has the load. That would strengthen the prior routine and give the usual cups and ball routine an extra twist that people will talk about.
If you do just one load with that technology the table needs to only have one gimmicked spot. Ergo the needed apparatus could be hidden in one of the legs or other supporting structure of the table. That would make it possible to have an extra thin table. But I cannot build anything. So fuck that idea.
It would be so much better if you were able to put the cups in the center of the table...
ReplyDeleteI really don't see a problem with having something like this. I mean if you just because your skill is lacking then it's a problem. But using it as a utility to do something that can't be done with normal sleight of hand, I see so problem with what so ever. I do agree though that if perhaps the areas in which could be loaded could change or have more loads then it would be perfect but, the idea itself is not a bad one. There are may such type tables to help do things that normal sleights alone could not do. Don't think it's a horrible thing as long as the table is used as a tool and NOT as the method!
ReplyDeletewell that's true with pretty much every little thing in magic. That's why I added my own little idea at the end. But this table, as is, is ugly (talk about the masking on the table) and the secret is more than apparent. It's the first method a lay person thinks of.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest complaint would be the fob activated nature of it. I'm a huge fan of the cups and balls which is a shame cause I don't have room for them in my character. But I have to say it doesn't really remove much slight of hand it's only real use is doing the final loads for you. To remove all the slight of hand in a full cup and ball routine you would need several load spots and quite a few balls. And yes it is horrendously ugly stand especially the top.
ReplyDeleteSo it's an ugly table that only does one thing but does it well for ~$1200. For that price I could get a Losander Floating table.
this is being called a game changer.. no its not a game changer.. its a silly toy for rich brats with too much money and not enough sense.. a game change is ed marlo's tilt.. a useful utility move, or le paul's pass alternitively... they allow you to cleanly control cards to the top with no cuts... this is a gimmick for lazy magicians who are probably using stripped decks and svengali's to do what we do with a normal deck of cards.. this cause $1200, you can make cups and balls for $3 with paper cups and rolled up tissue paper.. this product represents everything i hate in magic, magic is an art, art should be made with tools, when magic uses devices like that, its like magic done in MS paint.. any 5 year old could do it, it undermines the skills, dedication and artistry that is magic... to paraphrase mr T "I pity the fool who buys this product"
ReplyDeleteI think you'll find that it's Vernon's Depth Illusion...
DeleteThis is what i have always found truly laughable in magic. The lazyness to don't even practise sleight-of-hand or the fundamental skills necessary to astound people. Wow, nice table. What if you are at a party, and forgot your magic 1000$ table? Oops.. suprice. Just because you were to lazy to practise in the first place you need excuses. "No sleight of hand" isnt an pro or good magic advertisement for me, its the epitome of lazyness.
ReplyDeleteImagine if a pianoplayer was too lazy to practise and just performed with a CD player at the background. Things that are considered ludicrous in every other "art" or craftform are most of the time considered normal within the magic scene (yes yes i know, its all about the effect, just to make a point ;) ).
Don't let laziness be an excuse to don't practise sleight of hand.. skills for life, things and skills earned by hard practise which will bring you joy for your entire life. Instead of buying 1000 bucks for this piece of total garbage, pay 300$ for a good set of cups and balls and some books and start practising. Enjoy practising!!
i have spoken ;)
This is exactly why I will never amount to anything as a magician. I can't afford the good stuff.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, just maybe, Peter Loughran will have to go to jail for a month and then he'll put everything he makes on sale. I wonder if he has kids?
Hey, it could happen.
What a terrible prop...
ReplyDeleteThe loads would need to be done in the center of the table. When David Copperfield performs, he pushes his props as close to the audience as possible. This is doing the opposite, and it might appear to the audience as the balls are coming from the edge of the table.
Even more, this can barely help with the Cups and Balls! It only allows three objects to appear or disappear underneath the cups. For the most part, this is totally useless for most routines. As final loads, they're too small to be impressive.
And yeah, the table looks like sh*t.
What is next.. no magician needed anymore.
ReplyDeletestupid.
..
I watched this video very carefully......like all things (e.g. a $3 plastic trick, etc. etc. etc.)....in the RIGHT HANDS this could do some amazing things........but it's so "simple", alot of performers would do some horrible, lazy stuff with it. Didn't David Devant say, "Only professional magicians should use self-working tricks."?
