Wus up wiz this?

Are we on the brink of a new kind of magic sell out? So we got Luke Dancy hosting a web show called "Secrets Revealed". Luke Dancy, a professional magician, creator and consultant on "Mindfreak". So he is not of the usual spoilers of magic. In fact he doesn't spoil any magic at all. Eric Jones is. I respect Eric Jones. And he goes on explaining magic. His own magic. I'm okay with that, but why the hell? But first here is the video.

there is a second video, where Eric Jones is explaining the routine in detail.

Going back to my initial question. Are we on a brink of a new kind of magic sell out? Well obviously yes. It's not enough to teaser trailers. Obviously people are fed up with those and the lies. So Eric offers a bit of "honesty" by revealing parts of the product he sells.

And while I think that the routine is a whopper I cannot get myself not noticing the fact that it may not be his own. There is P.D.Q. Coins Across by Paul Harris, which is similar, but not the same. But let be check up on my good ol' Bobo: Classic Palm, check! Click Pass, check! Han Ping Chien, check! Well here it is. All the stuff published before Eric was born.

Hmm, maybe it truly is original. It's a worker though. I do a similar routine with just three coins. Quicker and a little bit easier. Maybe I should put it on a DVD?

Sad when it has come to this, that magic dealers have lied to the costumers so much, that the most desperate measure, that of exposing, is necessary to accomplish one thing. Selling Magic!

  1. The freaky eyes and inability to look at the camera was way too distracting for me. Either Luke has no idea how to work a camera or he's the world's worst auto-cue reader.

  2. When the masked magician did this it shocked the magic community. When Eric Jones does it it's ok? What's the difference?

  3. The difference is the sheer malevolence of exposure by Valentino.

And exposing ones own material is okay I think.

But you are right too. All the moves in Eric Jones' routine are not his. Exposing them is an atrocity.

  4. There are two reasons I don't consider this to be exposure. One is its from his own DVD, second is that of the target audience. This is targeted at magicians, the number of laymen that see this will be very few. That fox show was targeted a laymen and lots of them saw it. But that fox show is also why I don't think exposure is all that harmful upfront or in the long run.

  5. It's from his dvd but none of the moves are his creation. Classic palm, H.P.C., the 2 ahead phase from Harris' P.D.Q. coins across. These are big secrets of coin magic. And tv or Youtube, both are for the public. They used to say the the same about the crazy man's handcuffs exposed on Youtube, that only magicians will find it. In may area so many laypeople know it it's almost impossible to do the trick.

  6. Classic Palm, not that big a secret. I've gotten the reply "Thats pretty good palming you did there" even when I didn't palm anything (which is probably what made it so undetectable). As for the other stuff if its property of another magician he shouldn't expose it.

When it comes to youtube it is open for anyone but most people arn't sitting on there looking up magic videos, they have "better" things to do. As for crazy man's handcuffs if so many laypeople are familiar with it, its more likely that too many magicians in your area are doing it. Its like the ACR I know a girl that knows the secret to it not from the internet but because she has seen it over and over again by so many magicians. At least with an ACR there can be variety but not so with crazy man's hand cuffs, it may fool people once or twice but each time they see it they know more and more what to look for. Even if the non-magic people learned it's secrets from youtube, they didn't search for it until they saw one or more magicians do it. And if it's really impossible to do box it and add something else to you repertoire.

  7. Perhaps people in your area don't look up magic on youtube. But when I show something strong to a layperson I know chances are big they will look it up as soon as they are behind their computer! But the point is this is exposure. It is giving away secrets for free to the public.

  8. Allow me to quote Eugene Burger from his Article 'Five Secrets'

"Here's a good secret: Most people DON'T really want to know how its done, unless they're pushed into that mindset by a magician who frames his or her work in a confrontational way"[sic]

  9. Well, I would say, come see my perform and find out for yourself. Trust me, if you are a performer, one day you will be in trouble.... soon.
